If you are wondering what makes some people stand head and shoulders above the rest. While some are so small that they need to drink vitamins to make them tall is what a team of researchers are studying right now. The scientists now know of dozens of genes and genetic regions that influence our height. This provides scientists with a fascinating insight into how the body grows and develops normally and may shed light on diseases such as osteoarthritis and cancer.

Unlike a number of other body size characteristics such as obesity, which is caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors (so called ” nature and nurture”), 90 per cent of normal variation in human height is due ti genetic factors rather than, for example, diet. Last year, a team of researchers including Dr. Tim Frayling from the Peninsula Medical school, Exeter and Professor Mark McCathy from the University of Oxford identified the first common gene variant to affect height, though it made a difference of only 0.5 cm. Helicobacter Pylori makes you hole

Last Oct. 23, 2008, I attended “What Makes You Hole?” a seminar on Helicobacter pylori with the theme: Boring through the secrets of H. pylori: fighting off one of life’s adversity. It was held at the Mini Auditorium, San Pedro College, Davao City. The seminar was collaborated by the medical technology interns. The entire discussion features not only the need to know information about H.pylori but also the disease called peptic ulcer.

The title “What Makes You Hole?” boggled my mind of how it is related to H. pylori. Well, this was cleared to us by the guest speaker, Aaron I. Velasco MD, FPCP, a gastroenterologist in his discussion. “H. pylori is a gram negative, microaerophilic, curved bacillus. It is motile, has flagellae and has a special affinity for human gastric mucosa,” as he started to explain. (more…)

You know who has charm. But can you acquire it? Properly, you can’t, because it’s an originality of touch you have to be born with. Or it’s something that grows naturally out of another quality, like the simple desire to make people happy.

In a study of charm, what else does one look for? Apart from the ability to listen, apart from warmth, sensitivity, and the power to please, there is a generosity which makes no demands. Charm spends itself willingly on young and old like, on the poor, the ugly, the dim, the boring, on the last fat man in the corner. It reveals itself also in a sense of ease, in casual but perfect manners, and often in a physical grace which springs less from an accident of youth than from a confident serenity of mind. medtech week’s first day

The opening ceremony of Medtech Week 2008 celebration in Davao Region was held last September 14, 2008 at the University of Immaculate Conception Gym (Bajada, Davao City). Prior to the opening remarks of PAMET President of Davao Region is a 5 kilometers - foot parade from San Pedro College to UIC gym and a holy mass. The UICians are said to be the host of all the programs made. The theme for this year’s celebration is “A roadmap for the future of Medical Technology.”

vent @ school!

Whew! Here comes again the very busy days… It is what I actually want. I always complain before that I am bored with this semester because I only have minor subjects and few loads. I used to have difficult major subjects when I was in my previous school. And when I got home, I spend more than half of the night only for studying. But now, it’s totally the opposite of what I am doing at home, simply eat and sleep! Sometimes, I forgot to review my lessons but still I can manage my grades not to fail. In academics, I don’t have so much pressure to it. What I am complaining now is about the non-stop extra curricular activities in school!!! (more…)

Kadayawan Davao!

We have just celebrated the annual festival of Davao City in Philippines called, Kadayawan Festival last weekend. It is a celebration that interfaces the three aspects: tribal industrial, arts and entertainment. And it is considered as one of the biggest festivals in the Mindanao Region. Why is it called Kadayawan? Because it derives from the friendly and common greeting of Davaoenos or Dabawenyos , Madayaw! “Dayaw” means valuable or good or simply beautiful. Our theme for this year is: “Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan!” (“Flourishing Indigenous Heritage, Protecting Ancestral Nations”)

It was our acquaintance party and my very first time to meet all the medtech studes in our department. It was held in Grand Men Seng Hotel. “Begin with the end in mind.” This is one of the seven habits of effective people according to a book by Stephen Covey. This habit reminds us to be clear as to what we want to be, what we want to do, where we want to go, what we want to happen. For instance, if we want to effect change in the society, before we make any step, we must be clear about what kind of society we want to have. must be computer literate

We just finished our computer class awhile ago. I find it so boring because the activities were very simple and we have to eat up the whole two hours - session. It’s not that I’m boasting myself that I’m good enough in computers, but I believe even a five year old boy or girl can do the activies we had. Like just making a small picture or logo by using the MSPaint and writing a business letter using the MSWord. And each of them are to be done in two hours. Come on! You can even just finish it in less than ten minutes. We are old enough to think and work fast for those stuff. (more…)
